Trading bot makes no trades on 12 October 2026 as Nifty falls

I built an AI-powered trading bot that executes simulated trades on the NSE with fake money, and on 12 October 2026 it did exactly what its rules told it to do: nothing. It read the news on ten rising stocks, found none that qualified, placed no trades, and finished the day with its balance unchanged at ₹100,553.90.

Every stock the bot looked at

# Stock Sector Up at the start Volume vs usual Headlines Decision
1 Bajaj Auto (BAJAJ-AUTO) Automobile and Auto Components +3.54% 5.96x 5 Not bought: no specific company event
2 Siemens (SIEMENS) Capital Goods +2.51% 3.34x 5 Not bought: no specific company event
3 Polycab India (POLYCAB) Capital Goods +2.47% 3.75x 5 Not bought: event still to come; news not positive
4 Tata Capital (TATACAP) Financial Services +2.46% 3.16x 5 Not bought: no specific company event
5 Hitachi Energy India (POWERINDIA) Capital Goods +2.25% 2.74x 5 Not bought: event still to come; news not positive
6 Indian Railway Finance Corporation (IRFC) Financial Services +2.14% 2.77x 5 Not bought: no specific company event
7 Hindustan Zinc (HINDZINC) Metals & Mining +1.63% 2.96x 5 Not bought: no specific company event
8 Mazagoan Dock Shipbuilders (MAZDOCK) Capital Goods +1.94% 2.26x 0 Not bought: no headlines found
9 ABB India (ABB) Capital Goods +1.53% 2.47x 5 Not bought: no specific company event
10 CG Power and Industrial Solutions (CGPOWER) Capital Goods +2.05% 1.80x 5 Not bought: news not positive

Up at the start is the rise from the previous close when the bot started (about 09:35 IST). Volume vs usual compares the morning's trading volume with the stock's normal pace.

How the market moved

The Nifty 50 fell 0.97% over the bot's window, from its start at about 09:35 to 15:15 IST. The bot's own result was flat because it held nothing all day. The two figures are measured differently: the Nifty over the window, the bot on its whole starting balance. On a day when the index slid, a bot that only buys rising stocks on specific, positive news had little to work with, and the record below shows why.

Which stocks caught the bot's eye

Every morning the bot screens the 100 stocks of the Nifty 100 for two things: a rise of at least 0.5% from the previous close, and trading volume running at least at its usual pace. Today 38 of the 100 passed, and the top 10 went on to the news step.

Bajaj Auto led the list, up 3.54% on volume running at 5.96 times its usual pace, the most unusual volume of the morning. Siemens (up 2.51%), Polycab India (2.47%), Tata Capital (2.46%) and Hitachi Energy India (2.25%) followed. Then came IRFC, Hindustan Zinc, Mazagon Dock, ABB India and CG Power. One thing stands out in the table above: six of the ten were Capital Goods companies (Siemens, Polycab, Hitachi Energy India, Mazagon Dock, ABB India and CG Power).

What the news said

For each candidate the bot pulls the latest headlines from Google News, which links to many publishers, and an AI model reads them and rates the stock. Every headline it read, with the publisher and the date, is listed at the end of this post. This is what they said:

  • Bajaj Auto. Headlines from CNBC TV18 (a price page), RushLane (August sales figures by model), Equitypandit (a weekly outlook), Auto India Daily (upcoming adventure bikes) and IndiaIPO (a roundup of Deven Choksey's views on several stocks). The AI cited all five and found price commentary, sales data and opinion, but no specific company event, so the headlines did not explain the 3.54% rise and the rating stayed weak.
  • Polycab India. The clearest news of the day: The Globe and Mail reported that Polycab will release its Q2 FY27 results and host an investor call on 15 October, and Livemint ran a results preview for cable makers. The AI recorded this as an earnings event still to come, which does not qualify.
  • CG Power. Livemint carried a "Q2 Results" headline. The AI recorded an earnings event that had happened, but marked the news as not positive, and the headline gave no figures to work with.
  • Hitachi Energy India. The AI cited a scanx.trade headline about the company scheduling its annual general meeting for dividend approval, with the date given as 28 August, a date that had already passed. It treated this as an upcoming dividend event, not positive news. A morning NDTV Profit piece listing Hitachi Energy among stocks on brokerages' radar was also fetched, but the AI did not cite it.
  • IRFC. The AI cited a Goodreturns article asking whether railway stocks are attractive before results, which it recorded as opinion. Livemint's piece on IRFC's results and dividend dates, and an Economic Times item on AMFI's reshuffle of stock categories, were fetched but not cited.
  • Hindustan Zinc. The AI cited two price pages and a scanx.trade report that Vedanta had released its encumbrance on a 50.10% stake in Hindustan Zinc. It recorded this as a positive event that had happened, but it is not one of the kinds of company news the rules accept as a strong catalyst, such as results or an order win. An NDTV Profit headline that morning about the Centre putting share-sale plans on hold amid a market rout was fetched but not cited; the headline itself does not name the company.
  • Siemens, ABB India and Tata Capital. Mostly price pages and items about other companies. Siemens's headlines included stories about Siemens Healthineers and a comparison with Siemens Energy; only one, a CNBC TV18 price page, was about Siemens Ltd. ABB India's included a price page, a market-live blurb, a page about an unrelated company, and a dividend list. Tata Capital's included a dividend history page from INDmoney and a Benzinga item on housing loan guidance. None reported a specific company event.
  • Mazagon Dock. No headlines were found, so the AI had nothing to rate.

Why each stock was bought or dropped

No stock was bought. Since 12 October a stock only counts as strong if the headlines report a specific company event that has already happened and is positive, from the last few days. All ten candidates fell short, for four recorded reasons. Bajaj Auto, Siemens, Tata Capital, IRFC, Hindustan Zinc and ABB India had no specific company event in their headlines. Polycab and Hitachi Energy India had events still to come. CG Power had an event that had happened but was not positive. Mazagon Dock had no headlines at all. The decision for every stock is also in the table near the top.

How the bot behaved

The AI model read headlines for nine of the ten candidates and rated none of the ten strong. Code had nothing to approve, so there were no orders, no stop-losses and no targets. The new limit of one strong stock per sector, which also started on 12 October, was never tested today because nothing was rated strong.

After the close, the app grades every candidate by what its price did from the bot's start to the last close before 15:15, as if it had been bought then and held. This is a comparison of price moves, not of trades the bot made. IRFC rose 1.51% and Tata Capital rose 0.18%. The rest ended lower: CG Power fell 1.38%, Hindustan Zinc 1.15%, Bajaj Auto 1.13%, Mazagon Dock 1.04%, Polycab 0.53%, ABB India 0.40%, Hitachi Energy India 0.30% and Siemens 0.18%. IRFC, the best performer, was rated weak after the AI found only an opinion piece. I will keep recording this comparison every day so it can be judged over a longer period than a single session.

Where the information came from

For each stock the bot collects the latest headlines from Google News, which links to many publishers. These are the headlines the AI model read, with the publisher and the date. A star marks a headline the AI cited as the basis of its rating. Prices and trading volume come from Yahoo Finance.

How these numbers are measured

  • Gross: before brokerage, taxes and slippage, which are not modelled yet.
  • R: profit or loss divided by the amount risked at the stop-loss (a stop-loss hit is −1.00R).
  • Exit time: the 5-minute candle in which the stop-loss or target was touched; trades that touched neither are sold at the 3:15 PM close.
  • Nifty 50: price index, from the moment the bot starts (about 09:35 IST) to 15:15 IST. The bot's percentage is on its whole starting balance, so the two are not like-for-like.

Simulation notice: this is a paper-trading experiment with fake money. No real orders are placed. All results are gross, before brokerage, taxes and slippage, and a few days of results prove nothing. Nothing here is investment advice or a recommendation to buy or sell any security; stocks named are examples from the simulation. This post was written by an AI from the app's recorded data, and the tables are produced directly from the database.
